The Summit is our most commanding sculpted stump — a solid column of local red cedar finished in a soft whitewash that lifts the natural grain into something bright and architectural. As a modern wood stump side table it works beautifully beside a sofa or chair, and at bed height it becomes a striking modern nightstand; group a few together and you have an organic-modern coffee table or plinth. Each Summit is hand sculpted in the heart of Ohio — hand sawed, sanded, and even hand-chipped along the bark to honor the markings of the tree.

Handcrafted, made in the USA, and finished to top-end commercial-grade standards, it's a genuine piece of functional art — a modern table with the warmth of real wood.

Why buy Bertu Home stumps?

Kiln dried. Every log goes through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month, brought to a precise moisture level. This helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs.

Eco friendly. To replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year and practice salvage logging — sourcing timber that has fallen naturally or been damaged by wind, lightning, flood, or disease. Salvage logging can reduce erosion, lower the intensity of future wildfires, and slow the buildup of pest insects.

Family owned. These are made from our family to yours. We hand cut, de-bark, sand, and finish every piece with care. See how we do it here.

Commercial grade. These stumps are meant to be loved and used. Each is finished with a durable commercial-grade finish that stands up to spills, kids, and hospitality settings. An outdoor finish and Shou Sugi Ban charring are available on request.

Please note: these are REAL tree stumps. Natural movement and cracking are part of their character, and no two are exactly alike; sizes may vary slightly.

Important information about our stumps

1. Unpack your stump immediately and leave it out of any packaging — these are real pieces of wood and need to breathe.
2. For outdoor stumps: though kiln dried and suitable for outdoor use, humidity and direct sun can affect the top finish as the piece adjusts to a new climate. We do our best, but we can't control the elements and won't be liable; you can always sand and refinish.
3. Wood naturally moves. You may see more or larger cracks in the first few weeks as the piece acclimates to your home.
4. Nylon glides underneath make the stump easy to move and let air flow to the wood. Airflow works best on hard flooring; on rugs or carpet, check the underside periodically.
5. We are not liable for any damage to property or people. Questions or concerns? Write or call — we're always available, honest, and transparent. I hope you love these!

Bertu Home's Shou Sugi Ban Burned Black Stumps bring the same fire-charring technique — an 18th-century Japanese method for preserving and darkening wood — to the brand's smallest-diameter stump, sized for a nightstand, a stool, or a cluster of several as one coffee table. Each is a solid trunk of red cedar, hand sawed, sanded, and burned to a deep black, then sealed in a clear commercial-grade finish. Organic modern in scale and material, and available in an indoor or more durable outdoor finish.

These Shou Sugi Ban Burned Black Stumps are made in the heart of Ohio with locally sourced red cedar. The stump can be used for a side table, a stool, or grouped together for a coffee table. Each stump is hand sawed, sanded, and burned until completely charred, then sprayed with a clear commercial grade finish. These can be burned fully or the tops left raw to expose the beautiful red cedar color. Every part of the process is handled with care — even the bark is hand chipped and sanded to honor the unique markings of each tree. These are real tree stumps: natural movement and cracking is normal, and no two pieces are exactly alike. Each size and color can be done in our indoor finish or more durable outdoor finish.

These are handmade from our family to yours! See how we do it here.

Our stumps are now kiln dried! This process helps with major cracking, moisture issues, and bugs!

important information about our stumps

1. Please unpack your stump immediately and leave it out of any packaging. These are real pieces of wood and need to breathe!

2. The shou sugi ban finish is delicate. We try our best to put an extra thick coat of finish on the product, but we will not be held liable for damages on walls or furniture if finish chips exposing black.

3. For OUTDOOR stumps : Though these are kiln dried and the wood can be used outdoors, sometimes when they arrive in different climates, humidity levels adjust and can affect the finish on top. We see this more often in direct sunlight. We do our very best and continue to make sure there are no issues, but we can not control climate. Solid wood and the elements are unpredictable and we will not be liable. The great thing about these logs is you can always sand them down and refinish.

4. Wood naturally moves. These are solid pieces and for that reason, they are prone to cracking. You may get more cracks or bigger cracks in the first few weeks as the wood acclimates to its new home and climate.

5. These stump tables have nylon glides (feet) underneath not only to make them easier to move around (they are heavy!), but also so there is nice air flow to the wood. The air flow is most effective on hard flooring. If you put these on rugs or carpeting, we suggest checking on the underside of your stump periodically to prevent any issues.

6. We are not liable for any damages to property or people. If you have any concerns or questions you need to discuss, please write or call. We are always available, honest, and transparent about our products. Thank you and I hope you love these!

A modern square wood stump side table — and a striking modern nightstand — handcrafted from rough-cut red cedar by the artisan makers at Bertu Home in the heart of Ohio. Unlike our round tree stump tables, each of these is hand-sawn into a bold 12" x 12" square column: a sculptural, luxury stump table with serious character. Use it as a modern side table, a nightstand, a stool, or group a few together as an organic-modern coffee table.

Because these are solid red cedar cut to a square shape, they carry even more character than our maple squares — cracks can be as wide as 1/2" as the wood dries in our kiln. That is the look we love: no two pieces are exactly alike. A top-end, made-in-USA statement in luxury, organic-modern design — curated for The Swanky Abode. Please view all photos to see what to expect.

"I love natural elements. I'm inspired by them and I love being surrounded by them. I also love modern furniture and accessories. When thinking of new products a few years back, I wanted to do a modern twist on something considered rustic and 'country.' Thus the whitewash stump table was born! It's important to our family to not only design and manufacture beautiful things, but to provide the best quality and experience. There is a lot of love that goes into each stump, as we hand pick and finish each one per order. Add a little piece of nature to your home in a modern way!" — Gretta Jones // Bertu Home

Price includes free domestic FedEx Ground shipping. Our stumps are now kiln dried, which helps with major cracking, moisture, and bugs. Please note: these stumps will age naturally, even more so outdoors and exposed to the elements. Each is a solid log with its own character, so we cannot guarantee the finish won't fade or discolor, as this varies by climate and log.
