history

Percival Lafer is one of the most prolific Brazilian furniture designers from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. He was born in 1936, and graduated with a degree in Architecture from Universidade Mackenzie in São Paulo. Ironically, Lafer never intended to be a furniture designer. Upon graduating college, he had to take up, along with his brothers, his late father's furniture company, Lafer. Although his passion was architecture, he transitioned well info furniture design to make sure the company was successful.

When he began making furniture in 1961, his vision was to "bring good design to everyone, not just the intellectual elite" with modern, well-made pieces that were mass-produced. "Percival’s furniture not only captured the modern aesthetic of the moment, but was exquisitely crafted using gorgeous, solid hardwoods that were novel to U.S. consumers." With burnished leather upholstery and meticulous finishing details, Lafer’s pieces were also big sellers in Western Europe and Scandinavia.

Percival Lafer's work has always been marked by boldness and originality. For him, each project should reflect the state of the art applied to innovative ideas. Through all of successes, he still doesn’t necessarily consider himself a furniture designer: "I love to make physical objects, and I’m constantly thinking about all the ways I can improve them."

Lawrence “Larry” Peabody (1924-2002) was an architect, interior designer, and furniture designer. As an American born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, his distinctive design were often influenced by his Scandinavian roots. Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His early career with Selig Mfg. Co. was prolific and helped put both himself and Selig on the map for modern furniture. He then started Lawrence Peabody & Associates in 1955, a design firm in Boston which included a vast client list (Sears, Roebuck & Co., Kohler, Regal Rugs, Boyd Lighting, Chapman Lamps, and Richardson Brothers).

In 1961, Mr. Peabody won a Citation for Merit for his Peabody Collection for Richardson/ Nemschoff. Winner of the 1962 International A.I.D. design award for his wood frame rattan cradle chair, he also received the Walnut Classic Award for outstanding established collection of furniture executed in walnut. Lawrence "Larry" Peabody (1924-2002) was an architect, interior designer, and furniture designer. As an American born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, his distinctive design were often influenced by his Scandinavian roots. Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His early career with Selig Mfg. Co. was prolific and helped put both himself and Selig on the map for modern furniture. He then started Lawrence Peabody & Associates in 1955, a design firm in Boston which included a vast client list (Sears, Roebuck & Co., Kohler, Regal Rugs, Boyd Lighting, Chapman Lamps, and Richardson Brothers).

In 1961, Mr. Peabody won a Citation for Merit for his Peabody Collection for Richardson/ Nemschoff. Winner of the 1962 International A.I.D. design award for his wood frame rattan cradle chair, he also received the Walnut Classic Award for outstanding established collection of furniture executed in walnut. Functionality always plays into my designs as well, represented here by lower seating for a more intimate talking or lounging environment, and the platform wood extension detail on the sofa, which makes a great little table for your drink or cell phone. I envision this furniture used for indoor/outdoor spaces or any room that needs some comfort or relief. The Suelo® line reminds me of your own getaway - it has a natural, cool vibe and doesn't take itself too seriously. A low, wide seat rests on a sculptural hardwood base that is shaped and finished by hand — not machine — for a piece that feels grounded, resilient, and quietly luxurious.

Designed by Laura Trenchard to introduce the Catawba Collection, the chair takes its cue from Catawba Island and its dramatic Lake Erie shoreline — vivid winter whites against dark, rocky darks. That contrast lives in the deep graining of the wood and in the chair's confident, versatile stance.

Each Catawba modern lounge chair is made to order in the USA with hand-cut, high-density foam and commercial-grade upholstery. Available in walnut, maple, or oak, with additional exotic woods on request and a full COM fabric program.
