Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil.

Our stumps all go through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month. We are meticulous with bringing each and every log to a specific moisture level. This process helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs.

ECO FRIENDLY

In an effort to replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year. In addition, we practice salvage logging. Where do we source these? Some of the trees fall naturally. Some have damage from severe wind, lightning, flood, disease, or other natural disturbance so they need to be cut and removed before they fall. Others are fresh cut because people want them off their land. Salvage logging may reduce erosion, reduce intensity of future wildfires, and slow buildup of pest insects.

ARTIST BIO :
Addison Jones is a world class photographer and mixed media artist based out of the Midwest. Jones uses her street art and mixed media style to portray models from her own modern portrait photography. The result culminates in moody, sensual, and contemplative mixed media art focusing on the humanity of the subject. Each of her pieces are original works. Addison is known for layering her own photographs into complex street art and using the written word as a subtle texture feature. She utilizes silver and gold leaf, acrylics, and custom paints, including color changing, to add layers upon layers as she goes. In the end culminating in a piece that is viewed as a complex whole. She begins each piece with a photograph from her own portfolio, and then free flows through each element, drawing inspiration as she works. She often says that her style often leads to mistakes, that later become some of the best parts of the piece. She was once quoted, “Most of the time I am like “welp, don’t like the way that looks” and don’t care if I mess up, so then I do something and I like it and then I’m like ” I love this piece,“” as each piece shifts and changes throughout the process.

"Staring Into the Blue" is a street art, color-changing piece featuring my own portrait photography. It is a mixed media piece highlighting my custom formulated paint, "Muto,". This will change colors depending on the angle from which it is viewed adding a unique flare to any collectors wall.

My Artist Statement:

Through “Staring into the blue”, I aim to explore the complex and ever-changing nature of human emotions. The use of interactive materials was intentional, as it allows the viewer to physically engage with the artwork and experience the color changes that represent the fluidity of emotions within inner self. The gradual shift from one color to another was meant to symbolize the way in which inner self can change based on the different angles and perspectives views it. By creating an immersive and interactive experience, I aim to encourage viewers to reflect on their own emotional experiences and the ways in which they view life. Ultimately, “staring into the blue” serves as a reminder that all you have to do is take one step in a different direction to see a change in your life.

“Mean Mug” is street art featuring Jones' portrait photography taken from a shoot in an old building in Ohio in the middle of its reconstruction. This piece was turned into a a gold, street art portrait by using a collage-style layering technique.

He has both masculine and feminine qualities which contributed to me getting a variety of shots with different characteristics, allowing for original and interesting art pieces to form."
