Why buy BERTU HOME stumps?

KILN DRIED

Our stumps all go through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month. We are meticulous with bringing each and every log to a specific moisture level. This process helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs.

ECO FRIENDLY

In an effort to replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year. In addition, we practice salvage logging. Where do we source these? Some of the trees fall naturally. Some have damage from severe wind, lightning, flood, disease, or other natural disturbance so they need to be cut and removed before they fall. Others are fresh cut because people want them off their land. Salvage logging may reduce erosion, reduce intensity of future wildfires, and slow buildup of pest insects.

FAMILY OWNED

These are made from our family to yours. Quality is of utmost importance, and we hand cut, de-bark, sand, and finish every piece with care.

COMMERCIAL GRADE

These stumps are meant to be loved and USED. Each is finished with a durable commercial-grade finish. This finish is tough enough for spills, kids, and holds up in hotel and hospitality settings.

PLEASE NOTE : These stumps will age naturally, and even more so being outdoors and exposed to the elements. Each is a solid log with its own unique character so we can not guarantee the finish won't fade or discolor as this varies per climate and log.

This Boca Counter Stool with Bouclé Seat is made in the heart of Ohio with locally sourced wood. Each stool is made from a solid trunk of maple and beautifully hand sculpted into our Boca shape. Choose from a thicker seat, thinner seat, or mixture of both! Each piece is hand sawed, sanded, and sprayed with a commercial grade finish. Other finishes besides natural are available! Every part of the process is handled with care to honor the unique markings of each tree. PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE PRONE TO CRACKING. WE LOVE THE LOOK BUT THESE DEFINITELY ARE NOT FOR THE PERSON WHO WANTS A PERFECT PIECE.... LOTS OF CHARACTER. Cracks can even be as big as 1/2" wide. Bowties are added at the team's discretion to cracks that we feel will continue to open over time. These are all slightly different in character and they may vary in size - No two pieces are exactly alike.

The Vancouver Modern Sofa is a low, sculptural modern luxury sofa — a mohair-upholstered body floated on hand-shaped solid-walnut legs, with copper woven into its hand-built frame. The Swanky Abode is proud to bring this piece to our curated marketplace from the workshop of Craft Associates® Furniture, one of the modern, top-end American artisan makers we partner with.

Each Vancouver is built to order and entirely by hand. The frame and base combine bent plywood, solid hardwood, and copper — shaped by craftsmen, never a machine — over hand-cut, high-density foam. The walnut legs are hand-shaped and finished with a hand-applied oil or commercial-grade finish, and the seat is upholstered in commercial-grade mohair.

Handcrafted in the USA, the Vancouver is offered in our mohair, in your own COM, or through our fabric program — a genuinely made-to-order luxury sofa. If you provide the fabric, there is no additional charge for upholstery; a full fabric program is available for an additional price. Please contact us for details.

Vega Stool - 4922

The Vega stool is cut from a solid maple trunk, with its corners angled and sculpted by hand so a natural log takes on a quietly architectural form. Made in Ohio from locally sourced wood, this listing is the lighter maple version, and it serves as a side table, a dining-height stool, a nightstand, or a grouping that becomes a coffee table. It is organic modern at its simplest: real wood, a clear finish, and the character of one particular tree.

The stump can be used for a side table, a stool (the 18" for dining seat height), or grouped together for a coffee table. Each piece is hand sawed, sanded, and sprayed with a commercial grade finish. Every part of the process is handled with care to honor the unique markings of each tree. PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE PRONE TO CRACKING. WE LOVE THE LOOK BUT THESE DEFINITELY ARE NOT FOR THE PERSON WHO WANTS A PERFECT SQUARE.... LOTS OF CHARACTER. Cracks can even be as big as 1/2" wide due to proper drying in our kiln. The idea is that most of the cracking happens before it is sprayed, shipped, and in its new home. These are all slightly different in character and they may vary in size - No two pieces are exactly alike. Our team and clients absolutely love these.

"I love natural elements. I'm inspired by them and I love being surrounded by them. I also love modern furniture and accessories. When thinking of new products a few years back, I wanted to do a modern twist on something considered rustic and "country".

Thus the whitewash stump table was born! It's important to our family to not only design and manufacture beautiful things, but to provide the best quality and experience. There is a lot of love that goes into each stump, as we hand pick and finish each one per order. Add a little piece of nature to your home in a modern way!" -- Gretta Jones // Bertu Home

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OUR STUMPS...

1. Please unpack your stump immediately and leave it out of any packaging. These are real pieces of wood and need to breathe!

2. For OUTDOOR stumps : Though these are kiln dried and the wood can be used outdoors, sometimes when they arrive in different climates, humidity levels adjust and can affect the finish on top. We see this more often in direct sunlight. We do our very best and continue to make sure there are no issues, but we can not control climate. Solid wood and the elements are unpredictable and we will not be liable. The great thing about these logs is you can always sand them down and refinish.

3. Wood naturally moves. These are solid pieces and for that reason, they are prone to cracking. You may get more cracks or bigger cracks in the first few weeks as the wood acclimates to its new home and climate.

4. These stump tables have nylon glides (feet) underneath not only to make them easier to move around (they are heavy!), but also so there is nice air flow to the wood. The air flow is most effective on hard flooring. If you put these on rugs or carpeting, we suggest checking on the underside of your stump periodically to prevent any issues.

5. We are not liable for any damages to property or people. If you have any concerns or questions you need to discuss, please write or call. We are always available, honest, and transparent about our products. Thank you and I hope you love these!

history

Lawrence "Larry" Peabody (1924-2002) was an architect, interior designer, and furniture designer. As an American born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, his distinctive design were often influenced by his Scandinavian roots. Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His early career with Selig Mfg. Co. was prolific and helped put both himself and Selig on the map for modern furniture. He then started Lawrence Peabody & Associates in 1955, a design firm in Boston which included a vast client list (Sears, Roebuck & Co., Kohler, Regal Rugs, Boyd Lighting, Chapman Lamps, and Richardson Brothers).

In 1961, Mr. Peabody won a Citation for Merit for his Peabody Collection for Richardson/ Nemschoff. Winner of the 1962 International A.I.D. design award for his wood frame rattan cradle chair, he also received the Walnut Classic Award for outstanding established collection of furniture executed in walnut. Craft Associates® Furniture is honored to have acquired the rights to produce licensed Lawrence Peabody designed furniture.

"Modern furniture design, also referred to as midcentury modern for it's popularity during the mid-20th century, was influenced by the idea that craftsmen and artists could work together to create functional furniture with a more artistic appeal. In the design sense, modern does not refer to the current day, but to a particular aesthetic."- homeguides.com

The Boca is Bertu Home's turned counter stool — made in the heart of Ohio from two pieces of solid maple that are kiln-dried and then turned on the lathe. The result is a soft, columnar, unmistakably modern form with the warmth of real wood and a clean, hand-shaped line. It is organic modern furniture at its most refined: modern luxury drawn from natural material.

This listing is for the Boca Uno silhouette. Every stool is turned, hand-sanded, and sealed with a durable commercial-grade finish built for real use — a kitchen island, a hospitality bar, or a designer's counter seating. Because maple is a natural material, grain and tone vary from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. And because it is solid wood, a Boca may develop natural cracks over time — a hallmark of the material that we embrace rather than hide; when a crack opens, our team hand-sets a bowtie inlay to stabilize it and make it part of the piece's character. Shown in a natural commercial-grade finish; other finishes are available to order.

Looking for the companion shape? The Boca Dos counter stool is available here.

"I love natural elements. I'm inspired by them and I love being surrounded by them. I also love modern furniture and accessories. When thinking of new products a few years back, I wanted to do a modern twist on something considered rustic and 'country.' Thus the whitewash stump table was born! It's important to our family to not only design and manufacture beautiful things, but to provide the best quality and experience. There is a lot of love that goes into each piece, as we hand finish each one per order. Add a little piece of nature to your home in a modern way!" -- Gretta Jones // Bertu Home

Why buy a Bertu Home piece?

KILN DRIED. Every piece of maple goes through a drying process in our kiln, brought to a specific moisture level before it is turned. This helps control long-term moisture movement and keeps the finished stool stable.

FAMILY OWNED. These are made from our family to yours. We dry, turn, sand, and finish every piece with care. See how we work here.

COMMERCIAL GRADE. Each stool is finished with a durable commercial-grade finish tough enough for spills, kids, and daily use, and it holds up in hotel and hospitality settings.

Living with your Boca

1. Unpack your stool right away and leave it out of any packaging — this is real wood and needs to breathe.

2. Solid wood naturally moves. Your Boca may develop cracks as it acclimates to your home's climate; this is normal, and any crack that continues to open is stabilized with a hand-set bowtie inlay. Keep the stool out of prolonged direct sun and away from heat sources to help preserve the finish.

3. Nylon glides underneath make the stool easier to move (they are heavy) and allow airflow to the wood. Airflow is most effective on hard flooring; on rugs or carpet, check the underside periodically.

4. If you ever have a question, please write or call — we are always available, honest, and transparent about our work.

The Turned Leg Suelo® Side Chair is a modern luxury lounge chair, its reversible cushions wrapped in supple high-grade black leather and carried on hand-turned solid white maple legs. Made to order in Ohio, it balances a warm, sculptural modern shape with the quiet luxury of real leather and solid wood — an elevated, easy seat for a modern living room or reading corner.

The price includes an amazingly soft high-grade black leather. The Suelo® Collection consists of an arm chair, side chair, bench, daybed, loveseat, ottoman, dining chairs - both arm and side, and multiple orientations of sofas/sectionals for indoor or outdoor use. You can get any Suelo® piece in a solid or slatted version. This specific wood species is for indoor only; please contact for outdoor options. Multiple leather colors available.

Designer Inspiration: "The Suelo® Collection was inspired by my love for travel. So many places that inspire me have very minimal furniture, often built-in sofas with big comfy cushions, hammocks, raw natural wood, etc. The feel is low-key, simple, and comfortable. The wood isn't refined, it just IS. Functionality always plays into my designs as well, represented here by lower seating for a more intimate talking or lounging environment, and the platform wood extension detail on the sofa, which makes a great little table for your drink or cell phone. I envision this furniture used for indoor/outdoor spaces or any room that needs some comfort or relief. The Suelo® line reminds me of your own getaway - it has a natural, cool vibe and doesn't take itself too seriously. I imagine the sofa loaded up with pillows and some music playing in the background, of course." -Gretta Jones

"I haven't changed my mind about modernism from the first day I ever did it... it means integrity; it means honesty; it means the absence of sentimentality and the absence of nostalgia; it means simplicity; it means clarity. That's what modernism means to me." -Paul Rand
