history

John Risley (1919-2001) was an American artist and designer whose work ranged from utilitarian objects and furniture, to sculpture and fine arts. Risley was raised in Waterville, Maine. He was educated at Amherst, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Cranbrook Academy, where in the late 1940s, he met his wife, ceramicist Mary Kring Risley. Both of their work embodied the postwar, American crafts movement, where there was no hierarchy between functional objects and high art. Following Cranbrook, the couple worked for the State Department in the early 1950’s in the Philippines, and later Taiwan, pairing local craft industries and contemporary design. This experience led Risley to incorporate indigenous techniques and materials into his own sculpture and manufactured wood products. In the 1950s, Risley worked as a contract designer for Russell Wright, and later designed furniture distributed by Richards Morganthau’s Raymor line. John and Mary Risley eventually settled in Middletown, Connecticut with their children and lived in a house where nearly everything was made by hand. Risley was a professor at Wesleyan University from 1954 - 1988.

about the designer

Lawrence Peabody, an architect, interior designer, and furniture designer, was born in 1924 in Haverhill, MA. Mr. Peabody often preferred the name "Larry" instead of Lawrence although he tended to use the name Lawrence professionally. He was known to be a flaming extrovert and was rarely reserved in his opinions. He had a clear love of design even choosing the Navy because he liked the uniforms. After serving in WWII he was able to take advantage of the GI Bill. This allowed him to study at the Rhode Island School of Design. At RSID he was heavily influenced by Ernst Lichtblau who was part of the Austrian Werbund. At the time there was a heavy Bauhaus influence due to many Europeans who had fled to the US for WWII. After RISD the story goes that he wandered around Europe and ended up taking courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. While there he met his wife Bette who he wed in 1952. She was originally from Norway, a bit older and extremely interesting in her own right. She was part of the Danish resistance during the war, helping out as a nurse. She had also studied psychology and was a teacher. During a trip to Haiti, Lawrence became friends with Dewitt Peters, the founder of Haiti's Le Centre d'Art. Together they promoted interest in primitive Haitian art by corresponding with museums overseas. Lawrence bought a beautiful home in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in which he split his time later in life.

"Mid-century modern is a style of furniture design, product design, and architecture that began after World War II and continued into the 1960's. Often called "mod" and most definitely retro, this style is marked by simplicity, clean lines, organic forms, and materials such as wood, metal, and plastic. Though color is used quite a bit in post-war design, mid-century modern is typically less cutesy than the more pop-art offerings of the later 1960's." - Casasugar

history

Percival Lafer is one of the most prolific Brazilian furniture designers from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. He was born in 1936, and graduated with a degree in Architecture from Universidade Mackenzie in São Paulo. Ironically, Lafer never intended to be a furniture designer. Upon graduating college, he had to take up, along with his brothers, his late father's furniture company, Lafer. Although his passion was architecture, he transitioned well info furniture design to make sure the company was successful.
When he began making furniture in 1961, his vision was to "bring good design to everyone, not just the intellectual elite" with modern, well-made pieces that were mass-produced. "Percival’s furniture not only captured the modern aesthetic of the moment, but was exquisitely crafted using gorgeous, solid hardwoods that were novel to U.S. consumers." With burnished leather upholstery and meticulous finishing details, Lafer’s pieces were also big sellers in Western Europe and Scandinavia.

Percival Lafer's work has always been marked by boldness and originality. For him, each project should reflect the state of the art applied to innovative ideas. Through all of successes, he still doesn’t necessarily consider himself a furniture designer: "I love to make physical objects, and I’m constantly thinking about all the ways I can improve them."

"Generally speaking, modern furniture refers to furniture from the latter half of the 20th century and on into contemporary styles. Designers use the term "modern" furniture more narrowly to refer to the furnishings manufactured in the 50's and 60's post-war America, and to a lesser extent Europe. Modern Furniture experimented with new synthetic building materials, like vinyl and tubular metal, as well as developed an understated monochromatic color scheme, integrated modular elements with multiple uses, and featured curvilinear shapes." - wiseGeek
